LMS Transition History

In early 2012 JMU began a process to revaluate our learning management system. The process culminated in an in-depth evaluation of four learning management systems: Blackboard, Sakai, Desire2Learn, and Canvas. After a thorough evaluation of the four systems, the RFP Committee determined that Canvas is the system that will best meet the current and future needs of JMU faculty and students.

A very small pilot project began in the Spring 2013 semester. In Summer 2013, the implementation team initiated a “rolling migration” strategy for gradually moving course content and assisting faculty with the transition from Blackboard to the new system. During the rolling migration period between Summer 2013 and the end of the Spring 2014 semester, both Canvas and Blackboard were available. As of Summer of 2014 Canvas is the sole learning management system on our campus. During the course of the implementation process faculty members have had and continue to have many opportunities to learn how to use Canvas, including individualized or small group assistance in organizing the content.
